Adult education Richard Haar

The goal is to Make Disciples, we do this by baptizing and teaching. All that i have commanded you. we learn both what and who. as Pastors our Job is helping people to connect with Jesus, oh and he comes with us.
It is Jesus' church not ours. If you try and do it on your own you will fail.
Everything you do as a pastor is adult education, making disciples/learners/ people who are following Jesus.
What Richard is saying isn't as important as how he is saying it. He is doing adult education, obviousl only inpart i.e. we aren't receiving communion.
He got us to do group work.
For the sermon we should ask the question how will this help people trust in Jesus.
It helps to see Church council as a friendship group. He mentioned a resource Asap and explained that church is not rotary. The meetings got shorter when this resource was used. And people stayed on longer because of the Small group.

Lutheran community care

Helen lockwood.
Planting sun flower seeds . Being generous, but not stupid, even if we are taken for a ride.
They do lots of work. We had discussion about why we do good works. Work with the community.
Tthey have 70  employees 689 volunteers

Wayne boehm

Where do you put the most effort? You have to have bridges to the community. Wayne has a passion for outreach. Primary task is to bring people to Christ.
Church for kids once a term, the kindergarten is involved. Friday night hums.
Aim in worship is to encourage Gods people to be in outreach. Seek friendly worship. Concider the stranger who might rock up.
They have the practice of giving a potplant on baptism. Affirmation of witness.  Reminder of the duties for non christian god parents, that is they are to remind kid of baptism and help out parents.

270 people all up 50 at traditional 150 at contemporary 70 at Friday night
How strong is volunteer work? Two lackeys, who enlist volunteers. When getting people to groups write a letter and have one on one contact/ also works for new people.
Food and fellowship.

Bob kempe conflict resolution.

Our rights are not something that we have to hold on to. We can have the mind of a servant.
Some conflict cannot be reconciled. If people did not know there was a conflict it can cause an obsession when it is questioned.
Concerning the time spent dealing with conflict, most of our work is spent on helping people with their faith. Pastors can take problems that aren't theirs. People want to draw them in. The mistake pastors can make is to be sucked in . Its not your problem, its theirs. Jesus is not our judge to make a ruling on topics. "who am i, i did not come to judge over you"
Seeing conflict where there is none. Conflict can mean pain and men like fixing things.
What is the goal in mediation between two people. Reconciliation. Listen . Bring god into the situation. Keep the peace. The overall brief is for them to work it out. We can be sued if we give advice and it doesn't work out. The pastor is not a fixit man. That is gods job.
Discerning. You hope that they discern what the situation is.
Don't get involved in conflict that arn't yours. Cognitive behavioural therapy.
Our task is to name things. We can tell them how they see it. This is what i am seeing. "you want this and you want this and neither of you can do what he other wants""then they say yeah or no"
Not all conflict is bad. Arguing is not all bad. If their are no conflicts then the relationship is lying. The popular pastor is he one who avoids all conflict.
Say i instead of you. I believe. I feel rather than you do this.
There will be people you don't like and don't like you. But don't confuse liking with loving.

Mission

John ch 20
The focus should be on gods work not ours. God invites us to join us in His work.  Passages about God sending Jesus were highlighted.
The focus of this mission work was not with aboriginals or other countries but rather our own culture.
Getting the church into the world. Having a Lutheran church his grandchildren would want to be part of was one of his goals.
Now people will go to a funeral but not go inside. What do we actually mean by church. The building? Rather it is the people of god gathering around what god does for us by his spirit through his word and sacrament with Christ as the cornerstone and us the building.
The three categories for mission are churched de-churched un-churched.
The de churched are still witnessing outside. Success is wrongly measured by Sunday attendance.
90% of pastoral ministry don't daily read their bible. There are people who wont fit into our church culture. Should we not work at forming church for them. Pleasing people. For the most part we are following the confessions. The divine service is not bound by culture. It is outside of culture
We don't try and sell resources. Resources for pastors. Feedback is excitement and more positive than anything they have done.
Planning for mission. A one day strategic planning meeting. A mission statement, values, goals, ways of measuring them. In some situations helpful. But it might be starting at the wrong place.
Pastors working with church alignment. Willingness to work together between congregations. Everything involves structures and therefore programs. The future comes from a better understanding of who we are in his world.

Multi national congregation

Roger Russ. Cross-cultural. In Southerland. Indonesian family come Christmas day. 40 people wanted a bible study and 120 wanted a Good Friday service. the best aid to mission is to be  open to listen, respond and work with them. They must feel trust.
His parish allowed the extra mission work. Australians wanted the Indonesians to become like us. They saw tribal distinctions not denominations yet they were keen to learn English.
They only received Holy Communion twice a year. They did liturgy and the Pastor only did the sermon and benediction, which they really appreciated. Roger hinted that this might be an animistic emphasis.
they wanted the Pastor to tell them what to do and make them do it.
Roger learnt about different smiles, e.g. they have a smile that says "i have no idea what you just said."
Roger saw it as 2 opportunities to give the sacrament. He urged us to be positive in mission and that sometimes caring comes secondary to theology.
It was their tradition to only have Communion once a quarter. This was done on the logic that if they did it more often it would lose meaning.
Bloodshed was almost shed over the choosing of an elder.
Can take years or pastoral care for them to raise issues.
Thank god for your theological training. First minute determines how people will react to you. Know yourself and be open to possibilities.

Ps Stephen Schulz

Ask your elders about any traditions that might catch you off guard. Plan the year in advance. Ask about ANZAC day and special services. Ask whether it is your turn. Keep holidays and weddings in mind when planning. Don't double things like synod and confirmation.
Go through texts in advance picking a text and guessing a theme. This helps to see themes that flow through consecutive Sundays.
Use the original languages for exegesis when preaching. It's easier preaching every week. Use the language - don't use commentaries. Word studies, sometimes it's the small words.
With power-point people cannot anticipate what's next. Always have a manual backup.
The sermon is as much for you as for the congregation. If it hasn't touched you maybe you shouldn't preach.
Make changes in the honeymoon period. Plead ignorance.
